Dubrovnik Rooftops: Capturing Croatia’s Most Iconic View
There are some places that live up to the hype - and then there’s Dubrovnik in Croatia.
By the time I arrived, I’d already spent five days driving through Croatia. I’d landed in Zagreb, picked up a hire car, and made my way down the country stopping through Zadar and Split (plus other lesser known places) hugging the coastline the entire way.
It was one of those trips where the journey is just as memorable as the destination. But Dubrovnik… Dubrovnik felt different.
The Day I Took the Photo
The day I captured this shot was hot. Not just warm - high 30s, with the kind of heat that reflects off stone and lingers in the air.
I’d made my way up onto the Walls of Dubrovnik, which completely wrap around the Old Town. Incredible views - but not the easiest place to take your time when the sun is relentless and there’s very little shade.
Despite that, I knew this was the place to capture something special.
Composing the Shot
When you’re somewhere as photographed as Dubrovnik, it’s easy to just point and shoot. But I wanted something more intentional - something that would work not just as a memory, but as a piece of wall art.
What drew me in was the contrast:
The uniform terracotta rooftops
The way they lead your eye naturally through the frame
The subtle breaks of light and shadow across the buildings
And, of course, the glimpse of the Adriatic beyond
I waited for a moment where the light felt balanced - not too harsh, not too flat - and framed the rooftops so they filled the image, creating a pattern that feels both structured and organic.
It’s the kind of composition that works beautifully as a print because your eye keeps exploring it. There’s no single focal point - it’s a scene you sit with.
Why I Turned It Into a Print
Some photos stay on a hard drive. Others feel like they deserve more.
This was one of those images.
It captures more than just a location - it holds the feeling of that day: the heat, the climb, the stillness above the busy streets below.
That’s why I decided to make it available as a print through my store. Printed on high-quality materials, it’s designed to bring a bit of that Mediterranean warmth into your space.
