My First Wedding Photography Experience at Higher Trapp Hotel, Burnley | Davidson Photography

If you're currently searching for a North West wedding photographer, chances are you're looking for someone who can capture your day naturally, without turning it into a staged photoshoot.

In January 2026, I had the opportunity to photograph my first wedding at Higher Trapp Hotel in Burnley, Lancashire - and it perfectly reinforced why I started Davidson Photography in the first place.

A Relaxed Wedding at Higher Trapp Hotel, Burnley

To respect the privacy of the couple, we’ll call them S & J - a genuinely lovely pair who wanted their wedding day captured in a relaxed, natural way.

They weren’t after overly posed images or constant direction. Instead, they wanted:

  • Real moments

  • Genuine emotion

  • The in-between memories they might otherwise miss

Alongside those, they still wanted the important shots:

  • Ceremony moments

  • Group photos

  • Couple portraits

That balance is exactly what I aim to deliver as a Lancashire wedding photographer.

Shooting a Winter Wedding in Lancashire

A January wedding in the North West can be unpredictable - but we were lucky.

The weather at Higher Trapp Hotel was surprisingly kind, which made a huge difference. The outdoor spaces really came to life:

  • The greenery still had vibrancy

  • The grounds provided a calm, open backdrop

  • The gazebo created a perfect setting for couple portraits

It’s a great reminder that winter weddings in Lancashire can still offer incredible photo opportunities.

My Approach: Natural, Real Wedding Photography

My goal with every wedding is simple: Capture the day as it actually felt.

That means focusing on:

  • Guests laughing and interacting

  • Quiet, emotional moments

  • The atmosphere of the day

A lot of the time, I’m blending into the background - photographing moments as they happen naturally.

That said, I’m not completely hands-off.

When needed, I step in to:

  • Organise group shots efficiently

  • Guide couples into natural positions

  • Keep things flowing smoothly

During S & J’s wedding, I found a really comfortable rhythm between observing and directing, which helped keep everything relaxed while still delivering the key images.

What I Learned From My First Wedding

Although I’ve spent years behind a camera, this was my first wedding shoot - and it taught me a lot.

One of the biggest things I noticed was how naturally I settled into the day.

I was able to:

  • Move around freely without disrupting guests

  • Anticipate key moments

  • Confidently organise group shots

If anything, I was surprised by how relaxed I felt throughout.

Of course, there were also small lessons.

For example, I would now always check in advance with the registrar about positioning during the ceremony. Having that clarity helps ensure you can capture the best possible angles without hesitation.

Offering Great Value Wedding Photography in the North West

One of the core reasons I started Davidson Photography is simple:

Wedding photography should be accessible.

I understand that not every couple has the budget for high-end packages - and that shouldn’t mean missing out on having your day properly captured.

That’s why I focus on offering:

  • High-quality images

  • Reliable, professional service

  • Pricing that represents genuine value

While I’m at the start of my wedding photography journey, what I deliver is very close to what more established photographers offer - just without the inflated price tag.

My aim is to: Build a strong portfolio while helping more couples actually afford a photographer.

Coverage That Fits Your Day

For this wedding, I covered:

  • Bridal prep

  • Groom arrival

  • Guest arrivals and mingling

  • The ceremony

  • Couple portraits

  • Group photos

  • Post-ceremony moments

This kind of coverage works perfectly for couples who want the most meaningful parts of the day captured, without needing full-day photography.
